surprising a control freak

oprah celebrated the holidays with a show including rascal flatts (um, bad nashville boy hair), amy grant and vince gill, and kenny rogers. jamie fox made a surprise appearance. i'd realized i'd not blogged about this when talking tonight with a friend. said her husband was surprised at the mutual admiration between foxx and oprah. yeah. it's mutual alright.

favorite shots from favorite things

At least 20 audience shots withing the first FOUR minutes of the show (compare to NO audience shots from the horading episode). Favorite things causes mass-hysteria--and Oprah wants you to be glued to the madness (and to buy watches, shop at Target, etc).

coffee table?

When did Oprah put a coffee table on her set? There it is, right in front of Julia and Tom. I guess to make the set seem like Oprah's living room.

Hoarding=creepy

On this show Oprah used the straight to the story approach. I watched Oprah's first hoarding show a coulpe of years ago. It showed the lady who had dog crap on her floor, lots of pahtology there.

No messing around with showing the adulating audience cheering her entrance into the room--this is the way the Oprah Show handles sensitive subjects: child pornography, mike tyson's wife's appearance (abuse), anything 911. Very little audience shots are shown. The idea is that we (as viwers) are learning from the show. We are not voyeurs- this is not a spectacle. Or maybe that this is such a HUGE spectacle that we dont need shots of people oooing and ahhing to understand the magnitude.

Art or Not

So Oprah had "sweetie pie" Nate Berkus on yesterday to do some kind of "who in America can design their house the best". It was mildy interesting- seeing how a person constructs space and home. I like that stuff. But why on earth do "designers" insist on ALWAYS skimping on art? They say very things like "oh and I jsut got a book at Barnes and Noble then scanned it, printed it and it's insta-art". Really? So it that art or decoration? C'mon Oprah, you collect, why dont you get a backbone here? There are countless art school across the coutnry where students are willing to part with their mid terms for nothing. And art school mid-terms kick the ass of a photocopy any day.

Then today O talked about love. I'll stick to my "decorating" rant. Altho Nate is still cute.
